During the 2020-2021 academic year, many universities adopted surveillance programs to identify active cases of covid-19 with the goal of reducing transmission. At Duke University, we made an early decision to pair this effort with comprehensive viral genome sequencing and a later decision to continue surveillance and sequencing following widespread vaccination. The resulting data provide a real-time window into evolutionary processes, insights into patterns of transmission within the campus community, and rich opportunities for student engagement. I'll discuss some of the challenges and rewards of standing up a large-scale viral genome sequencing effort, as well as what we have learned so far and hope to learn moving forward.
